The stone church is the middle of Sa Pa town - everything is measured from its square, and every trek, tour and shuttle meets somewhere within sight of it. That geography is the whole point of storing here. Sa Pa runs on an awkward schedule: hotels check out in the morning, the treks through Lao Chai and Ta Van take most of the day, and the sleeper buses and the night train from Lao Cai back to Hanoi do not leave until evening. So there are several hours with a bag and nowhere to be. It is also a hill town with real weather, and a wet suitcase is a bad souvenir. Leave it at the church, walk the valley, and pick it up dry on your way down.
