On the western side of Tay Ho, where the new towers of the Tay Ho Tay development spread out towards the river, this spot is built for people leaving Hanoi rather than arriving in it. The airport is the obvious reason. From this corner of the city the drive north to Noi Bai skips the Old Quarter traffic entirely, which on a busy evening makes a real difference to how early you have to set off. West Lake is a short ride east, with Tran Quoc pagoda, lakeside cafes and plenty of shade, and it is a far better place to spend a final afternoon than a departure hall. So the plan writes itself: check out, hand over the bag, spend the day by the water, come back, and head for your flight. Open twenty-four hours, it also works for the red-eye departures that leave before sunrise.
