Ben Thanh Metro Station is where Ho Chi Minh City's first metro line starts, under the square in front of the old market. Line 1 runs east past Ba Son and out along the river towards Thao Dien and Suoi Tien, so a trip that used to mean a taxi and a long argument about traffic now takes twenty minutes underground. This spot is about ten minutes on foot from the station entrance, on the quieter side of the centre and close to September 23rd Park, where the airport buses pull in. It keeps daytime hours, nine in the morning until five in the afternoon, which makes it a sightseeing spot rather than a late-departure one: hand the bag over in the morning, ride the metro out along the river or walk to the market, Tao Dan park and the museums, and collect it before five.
