Hoan Kiem is the middle of Hanoi in every sense - the Old Quarter on one side, the French Quarter on the other, and Ngoc Son temple on its island in between. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings the roads around it close to traffic and the whole lake becomes a walking street. That is a wonderful thing to be part of and an impossible thing to do with luggage. It is also where the airport buses and most day tours pick up, so it is the natural place to be unencumbered between a hotel checkout and a departure. Store the bag at the lake, do the loop on foot, sit down for a bun cha, and collect it when you are actually leaving.
