The Old Quarter is thirty-six streets that still carry the names of the trades that made them - Hang Bac for silver, Hang Ma for paper offerings, Hang Thiec for tin, Hang Gai for silk. Seeing it properly means getting lost in it on purpose, turning down whichever street looks interesting, and that is a far better afternoon without a suitcase dragging behind you over broken kerbs.
